Staying or visiting Kiel during winter and wondering what to do? In this article I will talk about some top attractions in Kiel, also places to visit specifically in the Christmas season.

Top attractions in Kiel:

1.Naval memorial – a war memorial with a tower & observation deck, built in 1936 originally to honour World War I sailors. “In memory to the fallen soldiers. The memorial looks powerful and depressive. Inside there are some pictures and stories about the war time.” – July Summer in Google Reviews.

2. St. Nikolai church – “What an amazing old church. It was completely destroyed in the World War II. It is still under construction. I love the way the put in the modern style and keep the old up. I love it that it is so less with Prunk and Schi schi. Simple and smart.” – AnJa Mack in Google Reviews.

In winter Kiel also offers a variety of great opportunities to spend your free time or a weekend alone, as a couple or with the whole family! Whether it’s a cinema, cozy events around tea and coffee, ice skating etc. – the options are diverse. Here are my personal winter recommendations:

1.Visiting Christmas markets. Of course, Christmas markets are a must-visit in December. Hot wine or hot chocolate, Christmas music and little donuts will definitely put a wonderful Christmassy mood. There are four markets in Kiel: Rathausplatz, Holstenplatz, Amus-Bremer Platz and Bernard-Minetti Platz. The opening days of Christmas markets this year are November 27 – December 23.

2. Ice skating. There is an ice festival “Stadtwerke” going on from the 15 of November to January 14.

“The Stadtwerke Ice Festival has been a fixture in Kiel for 23 years and provides winter fun during the eight-week season. The fully covered ice rink at Ostseekai offers a wide range of activities including ice skating, skate hire, curling, company and Christmas parties and children’s birthday parties.” – Kiel official website.

3. Indoor swimming pools and thermal baths. Many of the indoor swimming pools in Kiel and the surrounding area have indoor and outdoor pools, some even have saunas and wellness areas. If you want to go swimming in Kiel and the surrounding area in winter, you will definitely find what you are looking for here. Most thermal baths are located above hot springs that bring special water, sometimes even medicinal water, to the surface.

Whether it’s healing water, brine thermal baths or just warm water, thermal baths bring incredible peace and relaxation and are a welcome change from everyday stress.

4. Shopping centres.  Although the trend of large shopping centers and malls originally comes from the USA, it also quickly became popular in Germany. Holtenauer Straße is a great place to stroll, it’s Kiel’s longest shopping street.
