The best way to spend your free time when you want to let your brain rest and do not think too much, or if you just want to relax – is to watch TV series. Movies are also okay. But sometimes you don’t have time for 2 or 3 hours and a 20-40 minutes break is just perfect. TV shows will let you relax and pause a little bit. But the part of choosing which TV show to watch can be quite difficult. So, I made my personal list of Top 5 Tv shows on Netflix. I wrote a bit of their narratives: when and where they take place. Also how many seasons (S) and episodes (E) they have and what is the average length in minutes (A.L.) of the episode. I hope you will find something for yourself!
Friends (S 10, E 236, A.L. 22, Finished)
You might think that I am old-fashioned, because this TV show starts back in 1994, but “Friends” is the best TV show I have ever watched. It is a comedy, so it doesn’t put you under the pressure or does not cause you any tension like drama or horror TV shows, it lets you chill, relax and smile. “Friends” also brings the good vibes of the 20th-century ninth decade with the clothing and music used in the episodes.
The narrative of the story is really relative and interesting because almost every person can feel relatable watching them – after all, we all have friends too. It is a story about six friends. Chandler is “the funny one”, he is the one who always makes sarcastic jokes. Monica is “the perfectionist” and has to do everything just right and put everything in the right places. Ross had three marriages and he is really “unlucky in the love affairs”. Rachel has a “weakness for fashion” and clothes, Joey is a “stupid one” and the Phoebe… well, she is an “artist” and that is enough to say. Each episode of “Friends” ends with a life lesson – from which the most important one is to trust your friends.
This TV show also has done a lot of collaboration with various Hollywood actors such as Brad Pitt, Danny DeVito, David Arquette, Winona Ryder, and many more. And we shouldn’t forget that the actors who play the friends themselves are now also well-known celebrities.
How I Met Your Mother (S 9, E 208, A.L. 22, Finished)
There is another comedy TV show which started one year after the end of “Friends” (in 2005) and it also includes friends, but their story is way much more different.
The future Ted is sitting with his two kids and telling them the story of how he met with their mother. The narrative of storytelling takes place in 2030 while the whole TV show narrative takes place in the early 2000. Barnie slept with about 200 women in his life, and this is not the end, he is the womanizer. Marshall and Lily are the cutest couple ever and already have been together for a long time. Robin is a journalist who moved to New York from Canada in 2005. And the series main character Ted spends nine years of the TV show – that is (208 episodes) in six relationships and with 39 women – searching for his person. And he finds it – it’s a story which is worth telling.
There are a lot of life lessons during this TV show, such as nothing good ever happens after 2 a.m., the front-porch test, graduation goggles, truly good friends can be your family, and so on. In the last-episode future Ted tells very important thing to his kids: “The friends, neighbors, drinking buddies and partners in crime … as the years go by, you just lose touch. You will be shocked, kids, when you discover how easy it is in life to part ways forever. That’s why – when you find someone you want to keep around, you do something about it.”
The Walking Dead (S 10, E 177, A.L. 45; 2 seasons upcoming)
The Walking Dead is the post-apocalyptic horror long-running series with already 10 seasons in its pocket. The Walking Dead became a mass phenomenon and created the whole universe of series. TV show are based on Robert Kirkman’s, Tony Moore’s, and Charlie Adlard’s comic book series of the same name.
The story begins when the main character former sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) wakes up from a coma and sees that no one is around and all over the world is a huge mess. Shortly he found out that the dead can walk and are extremely dangerous. As soon as Rick realized that the world as people knew is over – his main goal became to find his family and a safe and secure home. The series is not just about Rick Grimes, it is more about the group of survivors led by him in the zombie apocalypse.
During the season you will get to know every single group member, you will be surprised by deaths and some plot twists. Even if it is said in the title and the main characters live during the zombie apocalypse, the real danger for survivors is other people. Often in The Walking Dead other groups are shown as people who lost their humanity, who became radical and cruel just to survive. That’s what makes the show so great – human relations and life during the unusual setting.
Besides the main show, there are two spin-offs – Fear The Walking Dead (6 seasons) and The Walking Dead: World Beyond (1 season). If you want to get along to the full story – you might want to watch them all.
Lucifer (S 5, E 75, A.L. 42; 1 season upcoming)
Could you ever imagine the Devil becoming a detective in Los Angeles? If no, you should check out the ‘Lucifer’. It’s a TV show about the Devil himself, which was played by Tom Ellis.
After the eternity of being the king of hell, Lucifer understood that he had enough of it. He decided that it is time for him to spend some time on Earth to better understand humans and in general to have a more exciting life. On Earth Lucifer settled in Los Angeles, where he runs his own nightclub named ‘Lux’. The plot of the series starts when murder connects Lucifer and detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). After that case, Lucifer got interested in punishing criminals through law and justice and that leads him to become an LA police department consultant. Even if the show is about the Devil the mood of it is often bright and fun.
The series combines a few genres – urban fantasy, comedy-drama, police procedural, horror, and mystery. Besides Lucifer and detective Decker’s show features a lot of charismatic characters like Lucifer’s brother Amenadiel or Lucifer’s most trusted servant and lieutenant Mazikeen. There are many memorable characters in the series. I would highly recommend the show for everyone who seeks easy-to-watch fun and exciting series.
Peaky Blinders (S 5, E 30, A.L. 60, 1 season upcoming)
This TV show is half historical fiction half crime drama. It takes place in Birmingham, England in the 1920s after the first World War. The series is based on the true facts because the Peaky Blinders themselves were a real gang, but the story which is told is fictional. Also, the soundtrack in this TV show is incredible.
The entire show is about the Birmingham criminal gang leader Thomas Shelby and his family. Tommy (Cillian Murphy) himself served in World War I, he had the rank of Sergeant Major and was even awarded for bravery. His experiences torture him every night by nightmares, he suffers from a post-traumatic stress disorder and that is why he decides to move his family up in the world chain. So, he becomes a Member of Parliament as a socialist politician for South Birmingham.
Also, there are well-known real-life characters such as Winston Churchill and Oswald Mosley, who help to keep engaged and add subtext to the story. The show is not finished yet, but it is confirmed that the 6th season is going to be the last and will end in WW II. Speaking to NME, the director of the TV show (Steven Knight) said: “The destination for the whole show has always been the start of the Second World War, so the show is the story of the family between the wars.” I would also recommend it for history lovers.
